Haleakalā National Park
There are a number of parks located on the island, but Haleakalā is the only national park. This park is unique in that it is also a dormant volcano that is 33,265 acres, and 10,023 feet above sea level. It is also home to endangered species, rugged trails for hiking and camping, and for its epic views. Haleakalā is famous for its sunrise experience. Visitors who are committed will need to plan their outing to begin in the early morning hours, to make up to the park just to view this memorable sunrise. If you are driving from , you have a 49 mile or 1.45-minute commute. Additionally, be sure you have a full tank of gas and snacks, there are no convenience stores along the road there and no stores at the summit. If you are interested in heading out there, you must pre-register to enter the park. Because of the elevation level and the morning hour, be sure to bring an extra layer of clothes and blankets, the temperature drops. If you are not a morning person, the sunset experience may be your next best option.
